Richmond Area Pastors on Same-Sex Marriage

wedding ringsA coalition of Richmond-area pastors says Richmond’s City Council is overstepping its authority by considering an ordinance that would grant benefits to spouses of city workers in same-sex marriages.  The pastors say the state Constitution is clear in its definition of a marriage being between one man and one woman—which is also as the New Testament defines it.  Virginia Public Radio’s Tommie McNeil has more from the State Capitol.

“Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.”
Thus began the first of the Ten Amendments, or Bill of Rights, which were approved SEPTEMBER 25, 1789.
“The Father of the Bill of Rights” was George Mason of Virginia.
George Mason stated before the General Court of Virginia: “The laws of nature are the laws of God, whose authority can be superseded by no power on earth.”
This phrase of Mason’s was mirrored in the Declaration of Independence as “the laws of nature and nature’s God.”
So I will speak briefly of the laws of nature and of the words of Christ and of God.
The issues of gender specificity and complementarity are clear in nature and scripture.
The issues of marriage, procreation and family are also clear in nature and scripture.
Two men together have never procreated, two women together have never procreated, marriage is the foundation of family and the cornerstone of marriage is gender complementarity. It takes a male and female in marriage to procreate. Let us also remember that the life that they procreate is the bearer of the image of God.
Every procreated life becomes a child, who should have a family and in that family that child should have a Father and a Mother. That’s nature, and for humans it’s pure and simple.
Now for the words of Christ, our redeemer from the fall, who said, “For this reason shall a man (that’s a male) leave his Mother (that’s a female) and his Father (that’s a male) and cleave unto his wife (that’s a female) and become one flesh.” Christ was referring to the order of creation when God the Father of all, created them male and female and marriage being the institution of God continued after the fall to procreate male and female offspring as family is formed as the fabric of society. It is obvious that Christ declares that gender specificity did not change due to the fall and that God is still creating life in his image at the moment of conception as male and female.
We are blessed in Virginia to have a Constitutional Marriage Amendment and unlike California we are doubly blessed to have an Attorney General who defends our Commonwealth from the wickedness of Federal overreach.
These misguided members of the City Council have forsaken their solemn oath to defend our State Constitution and are a not only a disgrace to their office, but a disappointment to their constituents as they defy the will of the people of our great Commonwealth.
My prayer is that you will reconsider, change your position and stand with the State Constitution and the people of Virginia. In Jesus name, amen.
