Group Homes for the Disabled

familyWhen the Department of Justice told Virginia that it must comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act in caring for the intellectually and developmentally disabled, the state reached a compromise. The plan was to close four of its institutions and provide thousands of waiver slots through Medicaid for community-based housing. As Virginia Public Radio’s Tommie McNeil reports, the major stakeholders have met to evaluate the plan’s progress.

    Interesting that Mr. Price touts the addition of Group Homes, which the State is explicity refusing to fund. Also interesting that the Provider community does not share his perspective that capacity is not an issue. Mr. McNeil should probe and ask for the names of these new Providers and the addresses (or at least the localities) of these hundreds of new beds. Another good inquiry would concern where the employees to serve this greatly expanded capacity are coming from. I’d encourage follow-up with Providers, who will offer a corrected and “on the ground” viewpoint,
